Common Orthodontic Emergencies and How to Handle Them

Orthodontic emergencies can happen unexpectedly, but knowing how to identify and address them can make a big difference in your comfort and treatment progress. Some of the most common orthodontic emergencies include:

Broken Brackets or Loose Bands

Brackets can break or become loose from the teeth due to chewing hard foods or an impact. Loose bands can also cause discomfort and disrupt the alignment process.

If a bracket breaks or a band loosens, try to keep it in place if possible, or use orthodontic wax to hold it temporarily. Contact your orthodontist to schedule a repair as soon as possible.

Protruding or Poking Wires

Wires can sometimes shift, leading to a sharp end that pokes the cheeks or gums. This can cause irritation and sores if not addressed quickly. When this happens, you can use the eraser end of a pencil to gently push the wire back into place. You can also cover the wire’s end with orthodontic wax to relieve discomfort.

Lost or Loose Spacers

Spacers are small rubber bands or metal devices placed between the teeth to create space before braces are fitted. They can sometimes come out or become loose.

If a spacer falls out, call your orthodontist to see if it needs to be replaced. In some cases, enough space has already been created, and no replacement is necessary. These situations are manageable with proper care, but it’s always best to consult your orthodontist to ensure your treatment stays on track.

Distinguishing a True Orthodontic Emergency

Orthodontic emergencies can vary in severity, and it’s essential to understand what truly requires immediate attention. A true orthodontic emergency is any situation that involves severe pain, significant bleeding, or a risk of infection. In these cases, it’s crucial to contact your orthodontist right away to prevent further complications and ensure your treatment remains on track.

On the other hand, many common issues are minor irritations that don’t require urgent care. Mild discomfort from newly tightened braces, irritation from wires, or loose elastic bands are examples of non-emergencies. These situations, while uncomfortable, can often be managed at home with simple remedies like orthodontic wax or over-the-counter pain relief. Scheduling an appointment is still advisable, but they don’t pose a risk to your health or treatment progress if handled properly.
